We Know that Life’s Important Moments Happen at Home

Welcome! I’m South Florida/New York/New Jersey interior designer, Veronika Bamfield, and my main passions include family, coffee, and everything design & architecture (in that order).

And something that I know and understand all too well is that being human can be beautiful, wonderful, chaotic, and sometimes messy. I also know that your home is the space where you get the chance to be all of who you are—a full-functioning human being.

For me, that looks like being with my amazing husband who, shockingly, does not drink coffee, and spending as much time as possible with my three boys, all equally awesome and all equally (ahem) responsible for my coffee addiction. Life has me completely outnumbered.

This means that I live for useable counter space and functional storage. Because life is made to be lived, and when you don’t have the space to live it, things can get hard fast. I’m here to tell you that there’s a way to organize all of the chaos, systematize and coordinate the busy schedules, and even find a way to seat six to eight people around the dinner table.

Ultimately? You want a place for everyone to feel at home, which means that you need a space that works for everyone who’s a part of your life—your partner, your kids, your friends, and all of those relatives you love who want to come and stay for every holiday.

At Doma Design, you get to create what your sense of home looks like because life’s most important moments happen here and you want to make them all count.

Why We Have a European Edge & Modern Approach

I grew up in the heart of Europe and received my Master’s in Construction Engineering in the Czech Republic.

All of this to say, I know my way around not just interior design, but math and geometry as well! My first job after graduating was in Southampton, U.K. at a well-established civil engineering consultancy named Gifford, now part of Ramboll, a Danish consulting engineering group. I was on a team responsible for designing highway structures including walkways, bridges, and gantries (the metal structures that hold highway signs that no one ever notices). It’s a good thing that my technical background and the endless number of drawings I executed with meticulous precision would prepare me well for all of the skills that I would need for this job and beyond.

The Personal Story that Led to Doma Design

I’d eventually move to the U.S. from Europe to get married to my partner in Brooklyn in a very no-fuss yet classy way (just my style). And I learned two important things right away:

  • I’d need to retrain my brain to think in inches

  • I’d need to go out and get a real estate license

Just like that I was working in the New York City real estate market, measuring spaces with an imperial tape measure (in inches). I was eventually hired by Stonehenge, a large property management company with luxury apartment buildings in Manhattan, to be their property manager for Upper West Side and Upper East Side buildings. While I loved overseeing their apartment renovations life happened, like it does, and my priorities shifted to become a mom.

My world flipped upside down and all that mattered was that I was now responsible for a tiny and adorable new human being. Soon baby #1 was joined by baby #2, and my career took a back seat because life finds a way to remind you that things happen for a reason and seasons come and go. I can say with certainty that I understand what life and being human look like.

Once my kids were older, I felt like I was ready to jump back into my career. While renovating our condo in Jersey City, I connected with our contractor who had a growing business. They needed an interior designer as they were booking bigger projects and I was brought on in the spring of 2015. This role allowed me to work with the most talented tradesmen and learn my way around historic brownstones soaking up American architecture, design, craft, and trim (so much trim!). I loved every minute of every wonderful project I worked on as a Houseplay Renovations interior designer in Jersey City and Hoboken.

And then Covid happened—just as we wrapped up our home renovation and I gave birth to our third son (almost simultaneously). The pandemic era wasn’t what any of us were expecting, but we all learned to adjust. I reluctantly transformed my home office into a homeschool classroom and watched my baby turn into a toddler as I navigated life as a homeschooling mom of three while our family was preparing for a monumental move from New Jersey to Florida. Let’s just say we all deserve a medal for making it through!

And here we are. I needed the last few years to catch my breath, and now I’ve finally found my purpose and feel more motivated than ever to define my career on my own terms. Doma Design has been a business long in the making.

This business is a combination of my technical background, my interior design knowledge and experience, and my understanding of how life works and families function. I believe in creating comfortable spaces by coming up with precise designs and leaning on my minimalist roots.

Today, I am an interior designer in South Florida (our new home) as well as Northern New Jersey (our forever home). I’ve decided to split my professional life between Jersey City and Montclair, NJ, where some of my design projects are based, and Fort Lauderdale, FL, where we now live. As I like to say, I’m passionately renewing homes from pines to palms.

Every chapter of my life happened in the order it was meant to because it’s led me to where I am, leading Doma Design and knowing how to help families find meaning in their homes.

  • We love helping families find harmony and joy within the four walls of their homes because home should be a place where you love spending time—talking, laughing, cooking, doing homework, reading, playing games—with those who matter most to you. Everything is more enjoyable when you’re in the right environment and we love how happy clients are to finally have the home of their dreams and to see the positive impact it has on their everyday lives.

  • We help our clients who feel frustrated with their current homes transform everything that’s outdated, non-functional, chaotic, and cluttered into something beautiful, functional, and well-organized, so you have a home you love. We know how to turn any mess into magic!

  • We believe in functional layouts and satisfying our clients’ wish lists because dream homes should come true. We also love surprising our clients with something unexpected and special in the final design while always staying within budget and respecting project timelines.
